Until a few years ago, sustainable agriculture was viewed primarily through the prism of environmental protection and social responsibility. Today, an increasing number of companies in the agri-food sector treat it as a strategic element in building competitive advantage. Growing requirements related to ESG, the expectations of business partners, regulatory pressure, and changing consumer preferences make the way food is produced just as important as its quality, price, or availability. 

In practice, this means that sustainable agriculture is no longer solely an environmental initiative. It is increasingly becoming a tool supporting business development, building brand value, and strengthening the market position of enterprises operating throughout the entire food chain.

Why is sustainable agriculture gaining business importance?

Modern agribusiness operates in conditions of growing uncertainty related to climate change, raw material price fluctuations, regulatory requirements, and customer expectations. In such realities, companies are increasingly looking for solutions that simultaneously allow them mitigate risk and build long-term value.

Sustainable agriculture responds to these needs through actions aimed at improving soil health, more efficient use of natural resources, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and increasing the resilience of agricultural production systems.

Regenerative agriculture – the next stage in the development of sustainable agriculture

In the discussion about ESG and the future of food production, the concept of regenerative agriculture is appearing more and more frequently. Although it is sometimes used interchangeably with sustainable agriculture, in reality, it signifies a more advanced approach to farm and natural resource management.

While sustainable agriculture focuses primarily on reducing the negative impact of agricultural production on the environment, regenerative agriculture assumes the active restoration of ecosystems. For global food brands, regenerative agriculture is increasingly becoming an element risk management strategies. Companies such as Nestlé, PepsiCo, Danone, and Unilever are investing in programs that support soil regeneration and emission reduction because they recognize the direct link between environmental health and the security of raw material supplies.

The following three case studies show how global companies translate ESG into concrete operating models and competitive advantages.

Danone – ESG as risk reduction in the dairy supply chain

Danone focuses its ESG efforts primarily on the milk supply chain, which is one of the key sources of emissions across the entire production system. The main challenge is to reduce methane emissions and improve the efficiency of dairy farms cooperating with the company.

In practice, this means a model in which farmers are not merely raw material suppliers, but active participants in a large FMCG corporation's climate strategy.

Key ESG goals include:

  • a reduction in methane emissions in the dairy supply chain of approximately 30% by 2030 (global target),
  • striving to achieve climate neutrality by 2050.

From a business perspective, this ESG model acts as a stabilizer: it reduces climate risks, improves supply predictability, and enables compliance with the growing demands of retail chains and B2B customers.

Nestlé – ESG as a transformation of the food production system

Nestlé is going a step further than merely reducing emissions in its supply chain. The company is focusing on transforming the fundamental food production system, which is agriculture. A key direction is the implementation of regenerative agriculture, which aims not only to limit negative impact, but also to restore natural resources.

In this model, agriculture becomes part of the company's long-term raw material security strategy, rather than just a production stage.

Nestlé's key ESG goals include:

  • to incorporate approximately 50% of critical raw materials into regenerative agriculture systems by 2030 (global target),
  • achieving climate neutrality (Net Zero 2050).

Unlike the Danone model, here ESG not only manages risk, but redefines the way the entire agricultural system functions – from the soil, through farming practices, all the way to the supply chain structure.

BASF – ESG as a technological transformation of agriculture

BASF represents a third, distinct approach to ESG in agribusiness. Instead of focusing solely on emission reductions or the overhaul of food production systems, the company leverages ESG as a driver for the development of agricultural technologies and the transformation of its entire product portfolio.

The strategy is based on the integration of chemistry, biology, and digital farming tools to increase agricultural production efficiency and reduce the loss of resources such as fertilizers, plant protection products, or water. In this model, ESG is not an end in itself, but rather an outcome resulting from more precise and optimized agriculture.

A key direction of transformation is the shift from standard, schematic application of means of production to data-driven agriculture, in which agronomic decisions are made based on analytics, predictive models, and precision agriculture technologies (e.g., the xarvio platform).

From a business perspective, ESG is becoming primarily a mechanism for the development of the agricultural technology market—combining chemistry, biology, and data into a single system supporting agricultural productivity and efficiency.
