The key outcome is supply stabilization and meeting the growing requirements of customers and retail chains.

Nestlé uses ESG for a deeper transformation of the food production system. Regenerative agriculture is becoming here not only a tool for emission reduction, but above all a way to restore natural resources such as soil and biodiversity. As a result, ESG concerns the entire foundation of the value chain.

BASF It represents a technology model. ESG is a driver of product and service portfolio development here, rather than an end in itself. A key element is the development of so-called „Accelerator solutions,” which are intended to account for more than half of the company's sales by 2030, and digital farming (e.g., the xarvio platform), which enables data-driven agriculture.

Analysis shows that ESG in agribusiness does not have a single implementation model. In practice, it adopts three complementary logics:

ESG as risk reduction (Danone) – stabilization of the supply chain and emissions.

ESG as a system transformation (Nestlé) – restructuring of agriculture and soil foundations.

ESG as a Technology and Product (BASF) - development and sale of transformation tools.

The common thread among all these models is the shift from a cost-based approach to a strategic one. ESG is no longer an add-on to operations, but one of the key mechanisms for building a competitive advantage in the global agribusiness sector.

Summary

The examples of Danone, Nestlé, and BASF show that ESG has become an important tool for building a competitive advantage. Although each company implements this strategy in a different way, they all share a common goal. That goal is increasing the business's resilience to climate and market challenges.

For agribusinesses, this is an important signal. Merely implementing ESG initiatives is not enough if they do not become an element of the development strategy and competitive advantage. Equally important is the ability to communicate these activities to customers, business partners, and investors. It is precisely those companies that can combine real actions with credible communication that will build stronger brands, gain market trust, and compete more effectively in the changing economic environment in the coming years.

FAQ - frequently asked questions

Do sustainable agriculture and regenerative agriculture mean the same thing?

No. Sustainable agriculture focuses on reducing the negative impact of agricultural production on the environment and on the rational use of resources. Regenerative agriculture goes a step further—its goal is to actively restore ecosystems, improve soil quality, and increase biodiversity.

How does sustainable agriculture affect a company's competitive advantage?

It helps meet the requirements of customers and business partners, increases brand credibility, supports the implementation of ESG goals, and can facilitate access to financing and new markets.

Are ESG activities only important for large companies?

No. Increasingly, ESG requirements cover the entire supply chain. This means that small and medium-sized agri-food enterprises are also being asked to provide data on the environmental impact of their operations.

Why is the implementation of ESG activities alone not enough?

Because competitive advantage stems not only from implementing changes, but also from the ability to communicate them. If the market does not know about the initiatives being implemented, the company is not utilizing their image and business potential.

How to communicate activities related to sustainable agriculture?

The most effective content is based on data, specific examples, and practical experience. It is worth utilizing expert articles, reports, case studies, webinars, podcasts, and educational materials published on the website and in industry media.

Does sustainable agriculture matter for visibility in Google and AI search engines?

Yes. Topics related to ESG, carbon footprint, regenerative agriculture, and sustainability are increasingly searched for both on Google and in AI-powered tools. Publishing expert content increases the chances of reaching new customers and building a position as an industry thought leader.

Which companies most often use sustainable agriculture as part of their business strategy?

The most advanced programs are currently being implemented by global food and agrochemical companies such as Nestlé, PepsiCo, Danone, Unilever, and Yara.
